What We Do
CIPFA, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, is the only professional accountancy body in the world exclusively dedicated to public finance. Our 14,000 members and 3,000 students work throughout the public services, in national audit agencies, in major accountancy firms, and in other bodies where public money needs to be effectively and efficiently managed.
As the world’s only professional accountancy body to specialise in public services, CIPFA’s portfolio of qualifications are the foundation for a career in public finance. They include the benchmark professional qualification for public sector accountants as well as a postgraduate diploma for people already working in leadership positions. Our professional qualifications are taught by our in-house CIPFA Education and Training Centre as well as other places of learning around the world.
We also champion high performance in public services, translating our experience and insight into clear advice and practical solutions. We offer information and guidance, courses and conferences, property and asset management solutions, consultancy and recruitment for a range of public sector clients.
Globally, CIPFA shows the way in public finance by standing up for sound public financial management and good governance. We work with donors, partner governments, accountancy bodies and the public sector around the world to advance public finance and support better public services.
UK Public Services – Membership
At the heart of CIPFA are our members, who we support with high quality education and training, backed with vibrant regional and voluntary activity. For those working in public services, no other accountancy body can easily rival the experience of being a CIPFA member or the added professional support this brings.
UK Public Services – Policy
Our appeal to employers and employees is also strengthened by a strong policy voice for the profession and acknowledged technical expertise. We are a professional body and we maintain our position as a respected commentator giving objective professional advice. CIPFA is also a standard-setting body for aspects of accounting and audit in the public sector, setting local authority financial reporting standards in the UK and regulating its practising professional accountant membership.
The income we receive from our extensive business services not only supports our charitable aims and objectives but the products themselves play an important part in CIPFA’s offer advising and supporting public services.
Networks, Training, Advisory, Publishing and Information Services
We currently have 11 networks which cover finance, tax, governance and performance, as well as sectors such as police and housing. Each network subscriber accesses training and development, technical updates and thought leadership with some advisory support. Networks also generate additional training and sponsorship revenues as well as further advisory opportunities.
Our advisory services focus on finance advice, usually delivered onsite across the UK. Our Financial Management (FM) Model, which allows organisations to assess their financial maturity, is the model of choice across much of the sector.
Our training business delivers onsite, accredited training programmes and we are now expanding into e-learning, which enhances our flexibility in both the UK and international marketplace.
CIPFA’s publishing division offers a range of technical guidance and codes of practice in digital format, while our Technical Information Service (TISonline) gives subscribers access to a regularly updated online resource hub.
Our Research & Analytics team provides a range of data and benchmarking services to public sector organisations, providing insight and analysis to better inform decision making.
Our property business, based in Chester, covers four main areas – surveys, software, networks and advisory services. Our three property networks are subscription-based and provide an equivalent service range to those mentioned in networks above.
